5 Things to Always Pack in Your Carry-On

Many of us are gearing up for some long-awaited vacations. If it's been a while since you've had to pack for a big trip (or even if it hasn't been that long), make sure you're prepared for whatever comes your way. I’m assuming you already know that you need the basics in your carry-on: phone, tablet, computer, earphones, and chargers. But by packing these other five essentials in your carry-on bag, you'll be ready for any situation that comes up while you're away from home.

An extra change of clothes

You never know when your bag might take a detour. If you're a parent traveling with a small child, there are also pretty good odds that your kid will find a way to spill and/or vomit on you (I am speaking from experience). By having an extra set of clothes with you, you'll be able to stay comfortable no matter what happens. At the bare minimum, I will put a shirt and an extra pair of undies & socks in my carry-on. And if I'm headed someplace where the first order of business is jumping in the pool or ocean, then I throw a bathing suit in too. Just in case.

Your medications

If you have any prescription medications, make sure to pack them in your carry-on bag. Trying to get prescriptions filled when you're out of town--and especially when you're out of the country--is a real hassle. Better just to have them on hand, so if you get separated from your checked bag you won't be in a panic.

Snacks:

This is probably the most important item on this list! Snacks are essential for keeping your energy up while you travel. I like to pack a mix of healthy and unhealthy snacks so I have something for every mood. What's in my bag? I love a good trail mix, cinnamon bears and a variety of chips. And I always pack some Kind Bars, Cliff Bars or Rx Bars--these can come in handy once you land too.

A refillable water bottle

Staying hydrated is key when you're on the go. By bringing a water bottle with you, you can fill it up whenever you need to and avoid having to buy overpriced bottled water at the airport. Bonus points for being able to ditch those single-use plastics for something more eco-friendly!

A scarf, pashmina, or small blanket

Sure these things will help you when the plane is cold, but they can serve other purposes as well. I like to spray mine with perfume or some essential oils--that way I have something nice to smell in case the smellscape on the full airplane takes a turn for the worse. You can also use these as makeshift eye masks and pillows if you happen to forget or lose yours.

Do you have any travel essentials that you always make sure to pack in your carry-on? Let me know in the comments! Safe travels! :)
